But I didn’t win. I guess I’m going to have to get my first billion the old fashioned way, by started off with a million dollar loan from my dad. Guess my collection of BMWs is going to be stalled at two for the foreseeable future.

Plot twist, this is all a ruse and you did win...but you’re hiding to protect your identity.

Can I borrow that wagon?

If I win the lottery and buy that wagon, I’ll let you drive it.

At least SC doesn’t automatically identify winners, so this person has a chance of not being hunted relentlessly.

If I played then I would make the drive over the line to SC to buy tickets there for this reason alone.

You’ve got the Powerball to look forward to, right?

If you did win; I will sell you my low mileage E92 M3 for $5 million! A reasonable price for your deep pockets.

I think there are some schemes you can use to stay anonymous, but you are correct on that.

Not playing the Powerball, don’t feel the need to.

Not yet at least. My backup plan was to marry rich, that’s also not working out well. I guess I need to devise a new plan.

I don’t know that it’s predatory, but it’s definitely a tax on stupidity. My wife will buy a lotto ticket every now and then when the winnings get absurd like this one, but the odds of winning are so astronomical that buying tickets regularly is really just hurting yourself.

Well, to those with problems of addiction to gambling... the ads are a bit more than suggestive. Also, at least here in Mexico, most lottos are aimed at poorer people.... and they don’t have the transparency to prove they’re not defrauding them.

It can be it really depends on how much you spend , at the same time if you bought one ticket a week at $2/ticket, that’s only $104 a year. If you’ve got that kind of disposable income, go for it. I really don’t have a problem with people playing the lottery, as long as they understand the odds. This was the first time I think I’ve ever bought a ticket.

Yea, but all too often it’s people without disposable income who buy tickets every time they stop at a gas station. If you have the disposable income and want to spend it on that go for it...just make sure to view it as a source of entertainment and not a way to make a quick buck, that gets lost among too many people.

I grew up middle class, but my parents actually became high-upper-middle while I was in college. So it was weird, I never really knew “that life” (they still never wasted their money on fancy cars or country clubs).

My wife grew up pretty well off, but later in life realized her dad was juggling about 25 credit cards to keep it going, despite being a longtime physician.

Moral of the story: Class status in the US is easily faked.

Indeed. infact most people looking at my FIL would not guess that he’s doing so well. I only know because in the last 5 years o so the issues of his Will has been brought up so I’ m aware of his assets , and the fact that he has no real debt. Which also came with the realization that I need to step my game up. This guy grew up in a poor farm family, and through a few good business ventures, and lots of hard work he has thing set up so that when he dies, his wife and kids will be doing very well. I want to be able to say the same

My FIL had some battles with mental illness towards the end, so he didn’t exactly plan well, but he did make one very wise move to help protect it all: All of his debts were solely in his name with no real assets of his own (those were co-owned with my MIL). And he had about $1.5 million in life insurance, which is tax free and generally untouchable by creditors unless they want a big lawsuit. And since he only owed each credit card a relatively small amount ($10-$20k), you could argue that this was a genius move, at least to keep up the ability to provide for his family. So he died with a negative ~ $150k net worth, yet life insurance allowed his wife to keep going.

Not the route I want to take, but I had to give him credit.

Hey when there are loopholes, and you can figure out how to use them, then why not?

Also I don’ t th ink I or my wife have life insurance . We should change that.

If you don’t have kids and have at least some assets (and are both working), it’s sort of pointless. But when we had our first kid and my wife stopped working, I was like “LIFE INSURANCE NAO!”

IMHO, you really only need a Term Life policy to cover the hump — ie, 20-30 years for getting kids through college and things like that. A lot of insurers will insist you need the investment aspect of a Whole Life policy, but I think you’re better off investing on your own. Term life is around half the cost per month, but has no asset/liquidation value. It’s just like car insurance, but imagine locking in your rate when you buy the car and it never changes.

Also, if one of you dies, the other can take hardship withdrawals from retirement accounts if you have them. There are definitely substitutes for life insurance, but I have to say that watching my MIL get a lump-sum check with no taxes was pretty magical.

we have one kid, he’s 9. We have a house we still owe 80% on. it’s not like either of use would be totally screwed if the other passed suddenly , but I rather her be financially comfortable if she ends up a single mother. I’d be a lot easier on her if that hous e was paid off at the least.

Ah, my mistake, I though you were married/no kids. Yeah, definitely look into it. When I was about 32, I got 30 years of a $500k policy through Transamerica for about $37/month. The rate is locked for the entire 30 years and I can cancel anytime. The rate goes up another $1-$2/month for each year you wait (based on the rate tables at the time) since you’re going to be insuring yourself for a longer time period — including the later years when you’re more likely to croak :D

Depending on your age, a 20-year term might be fine and the rates are a lot lower.
